Makers & Materials

At Simswear, we're all about crafting clothes that not only look the part but stand the test of time. Our secret? Partnering with the best in the business and using top-tier natural fibres. Because if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it properly. Let's take you behind the scenes.

Our Scottish and English Knitting Partners

We've teamed up with some of the UKs finest knitwear artisans. These folks have been perfecting their craft for generations, blending traditional techniques with a keen eye for detail. The result? Knitwear that's as durable as it is stylish.

Using the appropriate knitting technique varies from product to product. Each technique has its own strengths, and it’s important to understand these clearly within the context of the end product, its characteristics and use cases.

We use a combination of seamless knitting and hand-linked panel knitting depending on the shape and fit we are trying to achieve.

Seamless knitting creates a clean, relaxed silhouette with a natural stretch. Panel knitting, on the other hand, allows for greater design flexibility, with each component hand-linked together to create more tailored and structured pieces.

Our English Shirt & T-Shirt Makers

Great knitwear deserves great company. That’s why we put just as much care into our shirts and T-shirts as we do our jumpers.

We work with some of the finest makers in England—craftspeople who have spent decades (some, generations) perfecting the art of turning premium cotton and linen into pieces that just fit right. Shirts that hold their shape, soften beautifully with every wash, and look just as good under a jacket as they do thrown on at the weekend.

Every maker we work with, we’ve met. Sat down with, had a cup of tea with, and watched them work. They’re good. Really good. Generations of skill within their four walls, and we trust them implicitly to keep making great products..

Our T-shirts are cut and sewn in small batches, using 100% Supima cotton—one of the softest, strongest cottons out there. Longer fibres mean less pilling, a smoother feel, and a tee that holds its shape wash after wash.

Our shirts? Properly made. The stitching, the seams, the collars—everything is done with precision, so they feel as good as they look. No gimmicks, no shortcuts—just quality British craftsmanship, the way it should be.

The Fibres We Love

We don’t mess around when it comes to materials. The best knitwear starts with the best yarns, and we’ve spent a lot of time (probably too much) making sure we’re using the finest, softest, most hard-wearing natural fibres out there. Here’s what makes the cut:

Merino Lambswool

Soft, breathable, and built for year-round wear. Merino lambswool is like nature’s thermostat—keeping you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. It wicks moisture, resists odours, and gets softer the more you wear it. No itch, no fluff, just a beautifully balanced material that’ll see you through whatever the weather throws at you. So soft, in fact, that people often ask if we've snuck in some cashmere.

All our lambswool is RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certified, ensuring it’s sourced from farms that prioritise animal welfare and sustainable land management.

Cashmere

The good stuff. Cashmere is ridiculously soft, incredibly warm, and somehow still lightweight. It’s up to three times warmer than regular wool, but lets your skin breathe, so you don’t overheat. The key to great cashmere? Long fibres. The longer they are, the less pilling you get, the longer it lasts, and the better it feels. Our yarn spinner, Todd & Duncan, literally has a machine that picks out and removes fibres that aren’t long enough. Not all cashmere is created equal, and that’s why we only use the best.

Our cashmere is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified, meaning it meets strict environmental and ethical standards from sourcing to production.

Cashmere Cotton Blend

The best of both worlds. Cashmere brings its signature softness, while cotton adds durability, breathability, and a more structured feel. It’s lightweight yet insulating, making it the perfect spring/summer fabric for those unpredictable spring days and al-fresco summer evenings we all love. Soft enough to wear against the skin, but strong enough to handle everyday life—this blend is built for comfort, longevity, and effortless style.

Supima Cotton

Supima cotton is the top 1%—literally. Pima is the strain and ‘Su’ stands for superior. Grown exclusively in the USA, it has extra-long fibres that make it stronger, softer, and more resistant to pilling than regular cotton. That means T-shirts that hold their shape, feel incredible against the skin, and get better with every wash. It’s lightweight but durable, breathable but structured—the gold standard for cotton, and the only kind we use.

Like our cashmere, our Supima cotton is GOTS certified, ensuring it’s produced sustainably and ethically from start to finish.

Belgian Linen

Nature’s answer to hot days and easy living. Ours comes from Belgium—home to the world's best linen—and has a natural texture that only gets better with time. It wicks moisture, dries quickly, and keeps you cool when the sun’s out. Plus, it’s one of the most sustainable fibres out there—flax (the plant linen comes from) needs minimal water, no pesticides, and thrives in poor soil. Good for you, great for the planet.

Todd & Duncan, our go-to yarn spinner

If you’re going to do something, do it properly. That’s why we get all our wool and cashmere from Todd & Duncan, Scotland’s finest yarn mill, and quite possibly the best in the world.

These guys have been at it since 1867—spinning yarns on for over 150 years on the banks of Loch Leven, a nature reserve . They’ve perfected the balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation, making yarns that are buttery soft but tough enough to last.

Why do we work with them?

  • Unrivalled Quality – They hand-pick the best raw fibres, carefully sorting them for length, strength, and softness.
  • The Perfect Twist – like a rope, the way a yarn is twisted affects everything—its strength, how it feels, how it drapes, and how well it resists pilling. Todd & Duncan have perfected the balance, ensuring our knitwear holds its shape and lasts longer.
  • Pure Scottish Water – Their yarns are dyed using soft, pure water from Loch Leven, which enhances colour vibrancy and ensures a smooth, luxurious finish. It’s a natural advantage that few mills in the world can match.
  • Sustainable & Responsible – Every batch of wool and cashmere is ethically sourced.
  • Deep, Rich Colours – We’ve tested a lot of yarn from all sorts of mills. When we say Todd & Duncan’s dyeing process is unmatched, we mean it. It’s what give you shades that stay bold and beautiful for years.

Basically, if you’re after knitwear made from the best yarn on the planet, this is where you find it. We wouldn’t settle for anything less, and neither should you.

When you wear Simswear, you’re getting more than just a jumper—you’re wearing a piece of craftsmanship, made with the finest materials, from the best people in the business. No gimmicks, no compromises, just proper knitwear that gets better with every wear.

Why Natural Fibres?

We believe in the power of natural materials. They not only feel great against the skin but are also biodegradable and kind to the planet. Plus, natural fibres tend to age gracefully, developing character over time.
